BERNAMA-University Collaboration Aims to Elevate Journalism Standards in Malaysia

KUALA NERUS: A collaborative effort between the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) and Sultan Zainal Abidin University (UniSZA) aims to enhance the quality of information delivery, particularly among university students, through the National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) Campus Tour programme.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, UniSZA vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Fadzli Adam highlighted Bernama’s role as the sole news agency in Malaysia, noting its exemplary standards in journalistic integrity, accuracy, and professionalism. Addressing the challenges faced by the journalism industry, Dr. Fadzli emphasized the impact of rapid advancements in communication technology, which have reshaped the global communication landscape.

“The spread of fake news is a major challenge, tarnishing the reputation of journalists and news organizations, especially on social media, where false and sensational information spreads easily,” he stated. Under the leadership of Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil, numerous dynamic ef
forts, including the HAWANA Campus Tour programme, have been initiated to fortify the media and communication landscape.

During the event held at UniSZA, officiated by Fahmi and attended by Bernama’s CEO Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, Dr. Fadzli underscored the importance of collaboration with the ministry and industry players to instill journalistic ethics in students. UniSZA offers courses through its Faculty of Languages and Communication, focusing on ethical news reporting.

Dr. Fadzli noted that various collaborative projects with professional media practitioners are planned to train students in producing accurate news reports swiftly. UniSZA expressed gratitude for being chosen as the final location for the HAWANA 2024 Campus Tour.

Additionally, Fahmi presented high-performance computers and smart TV sets to UniSZA, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), and Universiti Malaysia Kelantan (UMK). Laptops were also given to 82 UniSZA students affected by recen
t floods to aid their learning.
