Batu Caves Escalator Project: Technical Issues Await Resolution Following Agreement

Kuala lumpur: The Selangor State Government and the management of the Batu Caves temple have come to an understanding regarding the proposed escalator project. However, the project's implementation hinges on resolving certain technical requirements.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, DAP Chairman Gobind Singh Deo stated that both parties have concurred on the necessity of adhering to all relevant regulations before commencing construction. Gobind conveyed this information to reporters after a meeting with the management of the Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple in Jalan Masjid India.

The meeting between Gobind, who also serves as the Digital Minister, and the Batu Caves temple management addressed issues related to the temple's unique governance status. This status is determined by an old court order establishing a trust body, resulting in a distinct application process from standard procedures.

Gobind clarified that the dispute arose from allegations that the application for the escalator project was submitted under an individual's name. However, checks confirmed that the application was indeed submitted by the temple through Tan Sri R. Nadarajah, acting in his capacity as a trustee.

"The question of Tan Sri R. Nadarajah making the application in a personal capacity does not arise. It was made in his capacity as temple chairman and trustee for the committee, not as an individual," Gobind explained.

Previously, V. Papparaidu, Selangor Human Resources, Poverty Eradication, Orang Asli and Minority Affairs Committee Chairman, reportedly mentioned that the state government had rejected a Temporary Occupation Licence for the commercial project, including the escalator, due to constitutional provisions. Papparaidu noted that the application was submitted under an individual's name without an association registration, conflicting with the National Land Code, which mandates approvals only for registered associations.

On a different note, regarding the relocation order for the Sri Pathrakaliamman Temple in Jalan Masjid India, Gobind announced that Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has scheduled a meeting for tomorrow with the temple committee and management. "I will facilitate the process and see how we can assist the temple authorities in this matter," he stated.
