KUALA LUMPUR: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) announced plans to review a snatch theft case in Bangsar after the victim, 78-year-old Lim Foong Mei, passed away. Lim’s death has prompted authorities to reassess potential changes to charges against the suspect, M. Thanabalan, 38.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa explained that the review would focus on determining whether the victim’s death was linked to injuries from the incident. The suspect is already facing charges in court, but further investigations may lead to adjustments in the prosecution’s approach.
The incident occurred at approximately 6:30 a.m. on October 7, when Lim was walking along Jalan Limau Manis in Bangsar. Surveillance footage captured the moment a motorcyclist snatched her handbag, causing her to fall. Bystanders rushed to her aid and transported her to University Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM), where she received treatment for head injuries.
On October 24, M. Thanabalan pleaded not guilty in the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court to charges of robbery and intentionally causing injury during the snatch theft. The charges, filed under Section 394 of the Penal Code, underscore the serious nature of the crime.
The police review will play a crucial role in deciding the future legal proceedings against the suspect, as authorities seek to address the broader implications of this tragic event.
