Kuala lumpur: The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) will not take hasty action following the underwhelming performance of the national men's badminton squad at the recent Thomas Cup, says BAM secretary-general Datuk Kenny Goh. He emphasized that the governing body already had its own roadmap and long-term targets leading up to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA2028).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Goh mentioned that a knee-jerk reaction to tournament losses was unnecessary. The focus remains on the established roadmap towards LA 2028, which includes several milestones for each tournament. He stressed that as long as the team is within the roadmap and achieving set milestones, they are on the right track. Goh shared these insights during a press conference for the Malaysia Masters badminton tournament at the Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM).
When asked about national professional men's singles player Lee Zii Jia's intention to train at ABM, Goh stated that BAM was open to the idea. However, a few matters needed to be finalized before proceeding. Goh noted that in principle, there was no issue with Zii Jia training at ABM, but council members' approval was required.
The media previously reported that Zii Jia was open to joining training sessions at ABM regularly. According to Zii Jia, the plan remains in the discussion phase due to various considerations, including BAM's regulations.
Goh also mentioned that if Zii Jia were allowed to train at ABM, BAM would first review his training program. This review would help determine whether Zii Jia would train with the elite squad or the national back-up group. Goh indicated that the performance committee would refine these details.
