Sarawak: The Works Ministry’s ballot draw programme for G1 to G4 contractors, initiated in 2020, has significantly improved the standards, capabilities, competitiveness, and marketability of Bumiputera contractors. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi emphasized that good procedures lead to good outcomes and stated that the initiative will continue with yearly enhancements.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the ballot draw process serves as a transparent and fair mechanism to select contractors from a pool of qualified and competent companies with strong track records. This initiative mirrors the MADANI government’s commitment, aligned with the MADANI pillars of Sustainability, Innovation, and Trust, to empower and strengthen the local Bumiputera contractor economy.
During the ballot draw ceremony for the 2025 Federal Road Periodic Maintenance Contract in Sarawak for G1-G4 contractors, Nanta highlighted that awarding contracts transcends mere execution of work and embodies a trust that demands a strong commitment to ensure road maintenance meets specifications for the safety of road users.
He advised contractors to ensure systematic contract management by thoroughly understanding contract contents, including work specifications, implementation schedules, and reporting requirements. Nanta also emphasized the importance of efficient work and resource management, which includes structured work scheduling, effective workforce management, and optimal use of machinery and raw materials.
Furthermore, he underscored the need for sound financial management, noting that many contractors in the construction and maintenance sector encounter problems due to weaknesses in project and financial management. Nanta warned that failure by contractors to fulfill their responsibilities could result in negative consequences for the public, particularly with poorly maintained roads that fail to meet contractual specifications.
