Australia Supports Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship and Plans to Recognise Palestine at UNGA

Kuala lumpur: Australia has demonstrated robust support for Malaysia’s role as the ASEAN Chair, particularly in navigating significant regional challenges, including the Myanmar conflict, the Cambodia-Thailand ceasefire initiatives, and the integration of Timor Leste into the ASEAN bloc.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim conveyed that the Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Richard Marles communicated this support during a courtesy visit. Anwar also noted Australia’s commitment to recognising the State of Palestine at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) scheduled for this September, a gesture welcomed by Malaysia.

The prime minister stated that the visit is part of continuous efforts to enhance Malaysia-Australia bilateral relations, which have been firmly established since 1957. Anwar highlighted that the meeting allowed both nations to exchange perspectives and foster strategic cooperation in vital sectors such as the economy, science and technology, defence, and regional security.
