Kuala lumpur: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today assured that the recent political transitions in Thailand and Indonesia will not disrupt regional stability or investor confidence, describing ASEAN as relatively the most peaceful region.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar remarked, “As far as we know, things are quite settled in Thailand with their new Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and we wish them well. Stability is most important.” He further elaborated on his discussion with Indonesian President Prabowo, stating that the situation in Indonesia is almost back to normal, with no negative reactions from investors.
Anwar highlighted Malaysia’s role as ASEAN Chair, emphasizing the importance of continued investor confidence in the region. He also addressed the involvement of former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra as his informal adviser on ASEAN affairs, mentioning that further discussions with Anutin will take place soon.
Anwar’s comments come at a time when markets are closely observing the leadership changes in Thailand and Indonesia, with Anutin as Thailand’s new Prime Minister and Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa appointed as Indonesia’s Finance Minister, succeeding Sri Mulyani Indrawati.
To recap, Anwar appointed Thaksin Shinawatra as his informal adviser on ASEAN affairs in December 2024, aligning with Malaysia’s tenure as the bloc’s chair.
