ASEAN Must Uphold Unity and Neutrality for Regional Stability, Says Mohamad Hasan.

KUALA LUMPUR: ASEAN must uphold unity, independence and neutrality to ensure Southeast Asia remains peaceful and resilient, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He emphasized the importance of collective strength in facing the volatile global geopolitical and economic landscape, as well as traditional and non-traditional threats, urging ASEAN nations to depend on each other.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamad Hasan stressed that Malaysia’s success is intertwined with the stability of its neighbors, highlighting the theme of “Inclusivity and Sustainability” for Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship. He stated, “We must ensure ASEAN succeeds. Malaysia’s success alone means little if our neighbours are in turmoil. In an interdependent world, we cannot stand alone.”

He further advocated for a strong Southeast Asian bloc, noting that ASEAN’s strength would benefit Malaysia and other member nations. Mohamad also underscored the importance of soft power diplomacy and maintaining a neutral stance to
avoid being perceived as favoring any particular side.

Using the South China Sea as an example, Mohamad urged all parties to ensure peace in the region through a collective ASEAN approach rather than actions based on single-nation interests. He emphasized that the region’s stability is a shared responsibility.

On Malaysia’s readiness to assume the ASEAN Chairmanship starting January 1, Mohamad outlined logistics and substantive goals as key focus areas. He detailed the importance of high-standard logistics, particularly in coordinating the arrival of ASEAN leaders and partners, which he described as crucial to the success of Malaysia’s chairmanship.

He assured that preparations are well-coordinated under the oversight of the Chief Secretary to the Government, with all agencies clear on their roles. The substantive goals will align with Malaysia’s Inclusivity and Sustainability theme, guiding its objectives as Chair.
