Kuala lumpur: The government has announced significant amendments to the Penal Code aimed at tackling issues of bullying, harassment, insults, and identity misuse, including those that occur online. Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform), Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, revealed the introduction of these amendments to the Penal Code (Amendment) Act 2025 (Act A1750) which received the King’s approval on February 25 and was officially gazetted on March 7.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the new amendments incorporate sections 507B to 507G, which specifically address bullying through any means, including online platforms. The legislative changes encompass offences related to harassment, threats, bullying, insults, and misuse of identity information, covering scenarios that could lead to suicide attempts or provoke such actions. Those found guilty under these amendments face imprisonment for a term that could extend up to 10 years, along with a possible fine or both.
Azalina emphasized the responsibility of citizens to familiarize themselves with these new legal provisions, highlighting that ignorance of the law is not a valid excuse. She urged individuals to seek information directly from the Legal Affairs Division of the Prime Minister’s Department or the Legal Aid Department for clarification regarding these amendments. She stressed that understanding one’s legal rights and responsibilities is crucial for fostering a safer, ethical, and humane society.
Furthermore, Azalina called on all ministries, agencies, organizations, and institutions to ensure their employees are informed about current legal developments. She advised them to update internal policies and procedures to comply with the newly introduced legal provisions.
