KOTA BHARU: Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (AKSB) has taken several steps to overcome the causes of Non-Revenue Water (NRW) due to physical and commercial losses in the state. State Public Works, Infrastructure, Water and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Dr Izani Husin announced these measures, emphasizing proactive efforts to address NRW issues through leak detection and pipe replacement initiatives.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Izani explained that AKSB has been actively identifying and repairing leaking pipes with the help of a specialized team equipped with appropriate tools. This initiative includes replacing old asbestos cement pipes with more durable materials such as high-density polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, and mild steel concrete lining. These efforts are funded internally by AKSB and supported by Pengurusan Aset Air Berhad.
In addressing commercial losses, AKSB has undertaken the task of replacing outdated consumer meters, specifically those older than ten years or those providing i
naccurate readings. Additionally, the billing system has been upgraded to minimize errors during meter reading processes. An enforcement team has also been established to tackle water theft cases, further contributing to the reduction of NRW.
Meanwhile, in response to concerns raised by Harun Ismail (PAS-Tawang) regarding the safety of motorists due to blurring white lines on roads, Dr. Izani revealed that the state Public Works Department has prioritized road maintenance based on necessity. He highlighted that although the department requests an estimated allocation exceeding RM400 million annually, only about RM120 million is approved. Consequently, road repairs will be conducted in phases, focusing on areas requiring urgent attention.
