KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) is expected to take over all operations at 114 national entry points in January 2026, the Dewan Rakyat was told today. Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah announced that the transition will see AKPS become the primary agency responsible for integrated control and inspection duties at land, sea, and air entry points across the country.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, preliminary operations by AKPS are slated to commence on February 1, 2025, at 22 entry points, with the Immigration, Customs, Quarantine and Security Complex (ICQS) in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan, serving as the pilot operation location. The Deputy Minister emphasized the importance of this transition as a significant step in bolstering the nation’s border security framework.
Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah further explained that the agency is in the process of increasing its staffing to meet the demands of the expanded responsibilities. The AKPS, as
a frontline control agency, will play a crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s borders against various threats, including human trafficking, which remains a concern for Malaysian authorities.
The announcement was made in response to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Bharu), who inquired about the number of AKPS personnel, the strength of its assets, and the geographical scope of the agency’s assignments, as well as the statistics on human trafficking involving Malaysian victims.
