Kuala lumpur: AirAsia Malaysia has launched two new direct routes connecting Kuala Lumpur and Kuching to Pontianak, the capital city of West Kalimantan, Indonesia. AirAsia is now the only airline offering international flights to Pontianak, with services commencing on September 12, 2025.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, this expansion is part of AirAsia’s rapid growth in Indonesia, following the recent launch of the Kuala Lumpur-Palembang route in July and the upcoming Kuala Lumpur-Semarang service in September. The addition of Pontianak brings AirAsia Malaysia’s destinations in Indonesia to 17, with a total of 223 weekly flights between the two countries, reinforcing its position as the airline with the broadest network in Indonesia.
The launch of these new routes not only enhances regional connectivity but also supports Malaysia’s and Sarawak’s tourism targets. Malaysia aims to attract 4.3 million Indonesian tourists in 2025, while Sarawak is targeting five million visitor arrivals by the end of the year. It also contributes to Indonesia’s national goal of 16 million international arrivals, with Malaysia as a key source market.
The new routes were announced at the Sarawak Travel Fair in Pontianak, organized by the Sarawak Tourism Board, and were officially launched by West Kalimantan Governor Drs Ria Norsan. He highlighted that the direct routes will facilitate easier travel and boost trade, investment, and tourism.
The Consulate of Malaysia in Pontianak, represented by Consul Azizul Zekri Abd Rahim, noted that the new connectivity marks a significant moment in strengthening bilateral ties between Malaysia and Indonesia, particularly West Kalimantan. The expansion is timely with Visit Malaysia 2026 approaching, enhancing tourism, cultural exchange, and regional relations.
AirAsia Malaysia CEO Datuk Captain Fareh Mazputra stated that the strong demand for travel between Malaysia and West Kalimantan prompted the company to improve connectivity, making travel for business, tourism, and medical purposes more accessible and affordable. By launching flights from Kuala Lumpur and Kuching, AirAsia is providing greater convenience and flexibility, contributing to the tourism growth and economic development of both nations.
