90 Pct Of KRTs Still Active, Showing Strong Community Commitment – JPNIN

Kuala lumpur: Nearly 90 per cent of the 8,586 Kawasan Rukun Tetangga (KRT), or Neighborhood Watch areas across the country remain actively involved in community programmes, demonstrating Malaysians’ commitment to unity and grassroots development.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, National Unity and Integration Department (JPNIN) director-general Datuk Che Roslan Che Daud highlighted the growing number of active KRTs. This growth is attributed to increasing public awareness and the proactive role of residents in fostering neighborhood ties.

Each KRT receives RM6,000 annually for operations and is required to hold at least eight activities to maintain its active status. These programmes not only strengthen unity but also provide opportunities for local economic development, Che Roslan told reporters.

Speaking at the final round of the Dikir Barat Belia Perpaduan youth talent competition, held during the Kelantan state-level Rukun Tetangga Golden Jubilee celebration at the Machang Unity Complex, Che Roslan noted that while about 10 per cent of KRTs remain inactive, this number is steadily decreasing.

To aid inactive KRTs, a structured support strategy including counselling and mentoring is being implemented. Funding may be withdrawn if there is no improvement over time, he explained.

Che Roslan encouraged KRTs to pursue additional funding by proposing community-based economic projects like small-scale agriculture and food production. Examples such as chili sauce production or chili farming have empowered communities and generated income.

As the national-level Golden Jubilee celebration approaches on August 28 and 29, KRTs nationwide are organizing programmes highlighting local arts, culture, and community spirit. In Kelantan, a Dikir Barat competition is being hosted to uncover young talent and preserve cultural heritage.

The celebration will begin at KRT Kasipillay and conclude at Galaxy Hall in Sentul, Kuala Lumpur, spotlighting 16 KRTs that have reached the 50-year milestone, reflecting the impact of this grassroots unity movement.
