Penang: Reclamation works for Silicon Island have surpassed 80 hectares, marking significant progress in Penang’s largest land reclamation endeavor to date. The development spans a total of 930.78 hectares and is being executed in two phases, with 510 hectares in Phase 1 and 420.9 hectares in Phase 2. Reclamation began in September 2023.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Seri Farizan Darus, the chief executive officer of Penang Infrastructure Corporation Sdn Bhd (PIC), highlighted that reaching the 80-hectare milestone is a promising indicator that the project is on track. Besides physical advancements, the project aims to drive Penang’s long-term growth by integrating world-class infrastructure, sustainable development, and community-focused facilities. It is expected to create new opportunities for investment, innovation, and employment, ensuring enhanced facilities for the local community.
The Social Impact Management Plan (SIMP) is a crucial component of the project. Farizan stated that RM11.7 million in ex-gratia payments have been disbursed to 791 eligible fishermen, reinforcing the state government’s commitment to their welfare. Additionally, the government has initiated a boat and engine assistance scheme to support local fishermen with financial aid and modern equipment, enhancing their livelihoods. To date, 118 of 295 active fishermen with boats have received new boats and engines, with expenditures totaling almost RM10 million.
Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib and his wife, Toh Puan Raja Noor Ashikin Raja Abdullah, visited the project site to observe the progress, crossing to the island via a 378-meter temporary iron bridge at Permatang Damar Laut. Accompanying them were state Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee Chairman Zairil Khir Johari, Deputy State Secretary (Development) Mohamed Abdul Rahman, and Silicon Island Development Sdn Bhd (SIDSB) CEO Datuk Szeto Wai Loong.
During the visit, they were briefed on future facilities, including a 380-meter marine flyover, Pan Island Link 2A (PIL2A), Matang Food Court, community facilities, and a new Community Development Department (KEMAS) training center. Silicon Island, covering 930.78 hectares, is owned by the Penang government and represents its inaugural venture into direct reclamation project development to spur long-term economic growth.
