46th ASEAN Summit Begins as Key Forum for Regional and Global Issues

Kuala Lumpur: The 46th ASEAN Summit, commencing today and spanning two days, serves as a primary platform for ASEAN leaders to evaluate progress in the region’s political-security, economic, and socio-cultural sectors.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Malaysian Prime Minister’s senior press secretary, Tunku Nashrul Abaidah, emphasized that the summit is a crucial forum for addressing complex regional and global matters, including the South China Sea dispute, humanitarian crises in Gaza and Myanmar, unilateral trade tariffs by major powers, and challenges related to the digital economy and supply chain resilience.

Tunku Nashrul highlighted that under this year’s ASEAN Chairmanship, Malaysia, led by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, holds a significant role in shaping a stronger, more inclusive, and resilient ASEAN Community. He noted that Malaysia aims to ensure ASEAN remains relevant, responsive, and people-centered, aligning with the ASEAN 2045 long-term vision set to be launched.

In addition to the summit with ASEAN member states, Malaysia will host the 2nd ASEAN-Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Summit and the inaugural ASEAN-GCC-China Summit tomorrow, both chaired by Malaysia as the ASEAN 2025 Chair. The ASEAN-GCC Summit will evaluate the ASEAN-GCC Framework of Cooperation 2024-2028, focusing on initiatives in free trade, education, sustainable development, and cultural and digital connectivity.

The second ASEAN-GCC Summit reaffirms the long-standing commitment between the two regions, which have maintained relations since 1990, with total trade reaching USD130.7 billion and GCC investments in ASEAN amounting to USD390.2 million.

Today’s agenda for the 46th ASEAN Summit includes several key meetings involving the Prime Minister, ASEAN leaders, and representatives from various sectors. The plenary and retreat sessions will allow for in-depth discussions on regional challenges and ASEAN’s future agenda. Engagement sessions with the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA), ASEAN youth representatives, and the ASEAN Business Advisory Council (ASEAN-BAC) aim to enhance the inclusive aspect of regional policymaking.

A signing ceremony for the Kuala Lumpur Declaration on ASEAN 2045 will take place, where the Prime Minister will deliver the opening address, followed by the ASEAN Gala Dinner, marking the highlight of the summit’s first day. Additionally, several bilateral meetings with strategic partners, including Cambodia, Singapore, China, and Kuwait, are scheduled throughout the day.

Tunku Nashrul remarked that the summit marks a significant milestone in Malaysia’s journey as the ASEAN 2025 Chair, showcasing the Prime Minister’s leadership in shaping key summit decisions and demonstrating Malaysia’s commitment to inclusivity, sustainability, and regional stability. Hosting the summit provides Malaysia with a platform to coordinate the development agenda of a people-centered ASEAN Community, in line with the Malaysia MADANI aspiration.

Moreover, the chairmanship offers an opportunity to strengthen regional diplomatic and economic cooperation, including with dialogue partners such as the GCC and China. Hosting a large-scale summit like this brings direct benefits to the domestic economy, particularly in the tourism and hospitality sectors, as well as business opportunities for local small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
