Kota kinabalu: Police today arrested a 45-year-old man on a charge of allegedly using social media to make statements with seditious tendency against the Sabah Yang Dipertua Negeri (TYT) and the Chief Minister.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun stated that the man was detained at 2.45 pm in Papar after a police report was filed on September 7. The report concerned a TikTok post containing seditious elements and incitement. A mobile phone was seized from the suspect, and preliminary investigations revealed that he operated the TikTok account bentan_alamin_35, which allegedly published remarks against the Governor of Sabah and the Chief Minister.
The case is being investigated under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948, Section 505(B) of the Penal Code, and Section 233 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. Commissioner Jauteh disclosed this information during a press conference at the Sabah police contingent headquarters.
Further investigations revealed that the suspect had two prior records related to the misuse of network facilities or services, specifically social media. Commissioner Jauteh urged the public to exercise caution and responsibility when using social media, stressing the importance of avoiding statements that could disturb public order and cause unrest.
In a related incident, Commissioner Jauteh mentioned that another man, who allegedly threatened a pathology expert involved in the Zara Qairina Mahathir inquest, has been remanded for four days until September 11. The 61-year-old suspect was arrested on September 7 after a report highlighted a Facebook post with criminal elements against Dr. Jessie Hiu, a pathology expert at Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s Forensic Department.
