Kuching: A cutting-edge three-dimensional (3D) forest mapping system developed by the Forest Department Sarawak (FDS) could strengthen the state’s carbon trading capacity by identifying forest segments with high carbon sequestration potential. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg expressed his admiration for the system, highlighting its ability to provide essential data on a forest’s capacity to absorb carbon, which is a vital component in carbon trading.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari emphasized that the availability of this data allows for determining the aggregate absorption capacity of Sarawak’s forests. This information is crucial as the price of carbon is determined by the open market. With this data, Sarawak could support the imposition of a levy or carbon tax based on the forests’ carbon absorption capacity.
Speaking at the Sarawak-level International Day of Forests celebration, Abang Johari stressed the importance of continuing to develop new technologies to advance Sarawak’s green economy agenda without compromising the environment. He reiterated the Sarawak government’s commitment to prudently managing natural resources, driving economic development through opportunities created by environmental conservation efforts.
He further explained that the Sarawak government is integrating circular economy principles into its green economy initiatives. This includes promoting recycling processes, particularly from palm oil mills and livestock waste, to produce green energy sources such as hydrogen and methane. Abang Johari noted that Sarawak’s circular economy model was among the topics he highlighted in his keynote address at the ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur, where his phrase “don’t waste the wastes, monetise the wastes” captured the attention of attending economists.
He also mentioned that Sarawak’s green economy initiative received recognition at the World Asia Hydrogen Conference 2025 in Tokyo, where he delivered a keynote address. Abang Johari disclosed that he has been invited to deliver a similar address at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, which he views as acknowledgment from the global community.
In conclusion, Abang Johari stated that the invitation to the World Economic Forum signifies worldwide recognition of Sarawak’s policies, further affirming the state’s commitment to sustainable development.
