Kedah: The 2026/2027 school session in all Group A schools in Kedah, Kelantan, and Terengganu, involving almost one million students, began smoothly today. In KEDAH, 345,259 students in 753 primary and secondary schools commenced their academic year.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, State Education Department (JPN) director Abdul Rahim Mat reported that this includes 199,208 pupils in 548 primary schools and 146,051 students in 205 secondary schools. A total of 29,004 pupils entered Year One, and 28,778 students entered Form One, with 30,674 teachers reporting for duty this year. School operations throughout Kedah are progressing well, with the main focus being to address student dropouts and absenteeism.
In KELANTAN, 333,206 primary and secondary school students began the school session today. The Kelantan Education Department noted that 204,389 primary school pupils and 128,817 secondary school students were in attendance. Deputy secretary-general of the Ministry of Education, Datuk Wan Hashim Wan Rahim, announced the upgrade of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Pulau Beluru in Tumpat to a Comprehensive Special Education Model School 11 (K11). This upgrade involves phased implementation of additional facilities to address overcrowding.
In TERENGGANU, 256,822 students in 507 schools began their school year. Deputy director-general of Education (School Operations Sector) Zainal Abas highlighted that 9,528 were preschoolers, 148,886 were primary pupils, and 107,936 were secondary students. This year, a new preschool curriculum is being implemented, and preschoolers will be the first to experience it. They will also be the first cohort to use the new school curriculum when they enter Year One in 2027. Zainal emphasized the importance of the Supplementary Food Programme (RMT) in assisting students who may not have had breakfast before school. The RMT is part of 18 forms of assistance provided by the government to help meet students' daily calorie needs.
According to the 2026 Academic Calendar issued by MOE, the school session for schools in Johor, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Perak, Perlis, Penang, Sabah, Sarawak, Selangor, as well as the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan, and Putrajaya, will begin tomorrow.
