19th AMMTC: ASEAN Must Harness Generative AI, Data Sharing To Combat Transnational Crime

Melaka: ASEAN must harness generative artificial intelligence (AI) and strengthen data sharing in the fight against transnational crime, said Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail. He emphasized that global disruptions and new technologies are redefining security, with criminals exploiting digital platforms, cryptocurrencies, and AI to expand their operations across borders.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Saifuddin Nasution highlighted that generative AI technology is crucial for achieving key goals in combating transnational crime but stressed that this technology is only beneficial with access to the right and sufficient data. He urged ASEAN nations to prioritize data sharing to effectively tackle cross-border crimes. In his welcoming remarks at the 19th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Transnational Crime (AMMTC) and its related meetings, he outlined four priorities for ASEAN: enhancing actions against people smuggling and human trafficking, establishing a Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) Working Group on Money Laundering, finalizing the SOMTC Work Programme 2026-2028, and shaping the ASEAN Plan of Action to Combat Transnational Crime 2026-2035.

Saifuddin Nasution also called for ASEAN to demonstrate unity and courage in facing new threats, updating outdated systems, and making decisive moves to protect the dignity and safety of its 680 million citizens. This week, Melaka has become the regional focal point as ASEAN ministers and senior officials in security and law enforcement gather from September 8 to 12 for the 19th AMMTC and Related Meetings. The meetings aim to strengthen regional cooperation and address the threats posed by transnational crime.

These gatherings are part of Malaysia’s ASEAN Chairmanship 2025, under the theme ‘Inclusivity and Sustainability’, which reflects the country’s commitment to building a safer and more prosperous ASEAN community.
