Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian government's decision to continue the Malaysia Short-Term Employment Programme (MySTEP) into 2026 is drawing attention for its potential to offer valuable short-term employment opportunities to graduates, persons with disabilities (PwDs), and senior citizens. Work and disability expert Dr. Wan Arnidawati Wan Abdullah emphasized the significance of MySTEP in boosting employment prospects for these groups.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Wan Arnidawati highlights that MySTEP offers PwDs a crucial platform to build confidence, develop essential skills, and establish a record of employment. She remarked, "Most PwDs are not lacking in ability, but in opportunities to prove their capabilities."
Dr. Wan Arnidawati further noted the importance of involving senior citizens in the workforce, suggesting that with suitable task adjustments and flexible working hours, MySTEP could facilitate their continued economic participation. However, she stressed that the program's success will largely depend on the availability of post-placement support, including job guidance and employers' understanding of the specific needs of PwDs and senior citizens.
Public feedback about the MySTEP initiative has been positive, with individuals like Nordiana Mohd Samsul and Abdul Mizan Yusuf expressing optimism. Nordiana, who has been seeking work experience in the public sector, mentioned that MySTEP provides vital opportunities for building experience and self-confidence, especially for PwDs. Abdul Mizan echoed this sentiment, describing the program as a meaningful initiative that reflects the government's recognition of PwDs' capabilities and the commitment to an inclusive society.
Mohd Danial Irfan Samuri, another advocate of the initiative, praised MySTEP as a comprehensive approach that not only creates job opportunities but also enhances the capacity and confidence of young people. He expressed his inspiration from the initiative, acknowledging the government's efforts to provide a platform for gaining experience and contributing to national development.
The continuation of MySTEP was formally announced in a circular dated December 24, signed by the Public Service Department's Deputy Director-General (Development), Datuk Dr. Mohd Bakhari Ismail. The announcement, shared on the department's official Facebook page, was met with widespread approval and positive reactions from netizens.
Media reports confirm that the government has decided to extend MySTEP into the coming year, adhering to the guidelines set forth in the MySTEP Personnel Service Procurement Guidelines, effective January 1, 2026.
