Kuala lumpur: Malaysia has welcomed the understanding reached between the United States and Iran aimed at ending months of hostilities, while commending the role of Gulf countries, Trkiye, Pakistan and others in facilitating the memorandum of understanding. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim noted that the prospects for peace remained fragile and vulnerable to sabotage.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Anwar emphasized that strict adherence to all ceasefire terms, as well as the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping, must now be treated as an urgent priority. Anwar highlighted the ongoing challenges as food and energy prices remain high, impacting the global economy as countries strive to secure supplies. He stated that billions of dollars that could have been used for social and economic development have instead been diverted to securing essential goods, stressing that these issues significantly affect livelihoods.
In his keynote address at the 39th Asia-Pacific Roundtable, Anwar underscored the importance of addressing these economic challenges. The forum, organized by the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia, concluded today after three days of discussions. During the forum, it was noted that Qatar reported positive progress in indirect talks between Iran and the United States, focusing on the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Prior to the conflict, this vital passage handled about one-fifth of the global oil supply, underscoring its significance to international trade and security.
