IBS Technology Revolutionizes School Construction, Reduces Costs by 30 Percent

Kuala lumpur: The use of Industrialised Building System (IBS) technology in the MADANI Adopted School project is proving to be a game-changer in the construction industry, significantly reducing both time and cost. According to Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, the initiative has demonstrated a potential to cut construction expenses by up to 30 percent while accelerating the building process.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the pilot project under this initiative involved the construction of an additional building for the Integrated Special Education Programme (PPKI) at SK Tan Sri Awang Had Salleh. The project, which utilized six IBS modular units, was completed in just four months, a stark contrast to the 13 months typically required using conventional construction methods. This efficiency resulted in a cost saving of between 20 and 30 percent.

Amir Hamzah emphasized that IBS technology not only expedites construction but also reduces waste and delays, ensuring that public funds are used effectively. He noted that this approach aligns with global trends, as many developed countries are adopting modular construction technology to address rising costs and promote sustainable infrastructure development.

The success of this pilot project is expected to encourage broader adoption of modern construction technology in schools and public facilities across Malaysia. Amir Hamzah expressed hope that it would serve as a catalyst for future projects.

Furthermore, Amir Hamzah provided updates on the MADANI Adopted School Programme (SAM), which was launched on June 20, 2025. The program has so far involved 921 schools nationwide, benefiting approximately 680,000 students. In 2026, the number of participating schools increased to 1,500, with 146 school projects approved as of May 14, thanks to collaborations with government-linked companies, statutory bodies, and the private sector. Each school receives an allocation of RM100,000, with a total of RM50 million allocated to meet the target of 500 schools under government agencies.

The additional Pre-PPKI classroom block at SK Tan Sri Awang Had Salleh stands as a testament to the positive impact of the SAM programme. The nearest school with Pre-PPKI facilities was previously located 17 kilometers away at SK Permatang Damar Laut. The new facility provides special education students with a more comfortable, safe, and conducive learning environment, enhancing their focus and confidence.

The newly constructed 4,867-square-foot building is the first school project in Malaysia to be built entirely using locally-made IBS technology. It includes two classrooms, a multipurpose room, a mini dining hall, an indoor playground, and accessible facilities for special education students and teachers.
