EC Studying Proposal For Domestic Postal Voting Across Regions

Kuala lumpur: The Election Commission (EC) is conducting a detailed study on the proposed implementation of domestic postal voting for voters across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak. Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) M. Kulasegaran indicated that this comprehensive study requires engagement with all stakeholders, including political parties, before any final decision can be made.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the study is expected to be completed next year. This announcement came as a response to a query from Isnaraissah Munirah Majilis (WARISAN-Kota Belud) regarding the urgent need to transform electoral processes and introduce postal voting rights across regions in Malaysia during the Dewan Rakyat Special Chamber session.

In another development, Kulasegaran noted the government's openness to reviewing the EC's position to potentially place it under the purview of Parliament instead of the Prime Minister's Department. He expressed that this suggestion warrants consideration and will be presented to the relevant parties for a decision soon.

Regarding concerns about the enforcement of the ban on mobile phone use at polling streams, Kulasegaran stated that the EC believes the existing control mechanisms are sufficient. Therefore, there are no plans to amend the procedure or introduce it as a specific offence under the Election Offences Act 1954.
