Kuala lumpur: Barisan Nasional (BN) president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has confirmed that Mohd Naim Kurniawan, the son of former Sabah UMNO chairman the late Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin, has been named as the coalition's candidate for the Kinabatangan parliamentary seat in the by-election to be held next month. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Deputy Prime Minister, said he had informed Mohd Naim of the matter and instructed him to begin campaign activities to ensure the seat remains in BN's hands.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Ahmad Zahid stated that the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) will not be fielding a candidate, and discussions with the Sabah Chief Minister and other parties have indicated that they may also refrain from contesting due to the recent state election. Ahmad Zahid suggested that conserving energy for the upcoming 16th General Election, which could occur within two years, would be a prudent strategy.
Ahmad Zahid emphasized the importance of not underestimating the political situation in Sabah, despite the absence of major competition. He acknowledged the potential for independent candidates or smaller parties to enter the race, stressing the need for BN to remain vigilant. He expressed support for Mohd Naim, highlighting the importance of continuity in completing the late Bung Moktar's service.
Regarding the Lamag state seat, Ahmad Zahid noted that the announcement of the candidate and related negotiations would be managed by Sabah UMNO chairman Datuk Jaffry Ariffin. Several names have been proposed, with an announcement expected soon.
The Kinabatangan parliamentary and Lamag state seats became vacant following the death of Bung Moktar on December 5. The Election Commission (EC) has scheduled the polling day for both by-elections on January 24, 2026, with nomination day and early voting set for January 10 and January 20, respectively. Bung Moktar had previously defended the Lamag state seat in the 17th Sabah State Election on November 29.
