Asia Pacific Airlines Lead Global Air Cargo Growth with 8.4% Rise in 2025

Kuala lumpur: Asia Pacific airlines emerged as leaders in global air cargo performance in 2025, with a significant 8.4 percent increase in demand, measured in cargo tonne-kilometres (CTK), as reported by the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the region's robust performance was bolstered by key routes and reflected a 9.4 percent year-on-year growth in December 2025. This surge was driven by year-end e-commerce activities and sustained intra-regional trade, further solidifying Asia Pacific's position as a critical growth engine for the industry.

Globally, air cargo demand experienced a 3.4 percent year-on-year increase in 2025, with a 4.3 percent rise observed in December 2025. IATA's director general, Willie Walsh, highlighted the influence of strong global e-commerce volumes, despite challenges such as rising tariffs, the removal of de minimis tariff exemptions, and ongoing policy uncertainties affecting trade relationships with the United States.

Walsh noted that air cargo adapted swiftly to support global businesses and supply chains, particularly as companies accelerated product deliveries in anticipation of tariff impositions. The demand within Asia and between Asia and Europe grew, even as US-Asia trade experienced stagnation.

Looking ahead, Walsh projected a moderate growth rate of 2.4 percent in 2026, aligning with historical trends. He emphasized that trade and geopolitical developments would continue to shape demand patterns. Regardless of emerging trading dynamics, Walsh expressed confidence in air cargo's crucial role in maintaining global supply chains, with carriers poised to meet challenges by optimizing capacity and network flexibility.
