Kuala lumpur: YTL Construction is strengthening its workplace safety culture through its annual Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Week, reinforcing its commitment to making safety, health, and wellbeing an integral part of everyday operations.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, YTL Construction executive director Yeoh Keong Yuan stated that HSE Week is not merely an annual event but a platform to embed safety as a core organizational value. This year, a wide range of activities focusing on safety, health, and wellbeing were organized to further strengthen the Safety First culture across the YTL Group. In addition to raising awareness, YTL Construction is taking a comprehensive approach by investing in employee training and competency development.
A significant initiative is the establishment of the YTL Safety Training Centre in Brickfields, which serves as a dedicated safety training facility for YTL Construction employees and staff across the wider YTL Group. Through this centre, the workforce can gain a better understanding of workplace safety and develop strong safety practices before entering project sites. Additionally, YTL Construction has introduced the YTL Construction Safety Passport, a compulsory safety training programme for employees and business partners before they are allowed to enter YTL project sites.
Yeoh emphasized that the success of the company's safety initiatives is measured not by awards alone, but by ensuring every employee can perform their duties safely and return home to their families each day. YTL Construction's commitment to workplace safety has earned several accolades, including the National Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) Award from the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) and the QLASSIC Excellence Award. The YTL Green Data Centre project in Kulai was also named champion in the construction category by SWCorp Malaysia and received the Solid Waste Management Star Rating Award.
Meanwhile, DOSH director-general Hazlina Yon noted that programmes such as HSE Week reflect an organization's commitment to fostering a workplace culture that prioritizes occupational safety, health, and environmental sustainability. She highlighted that the construction industry remains one of the country's highest-risk sectors, with Malaysia recording 40,882 workplace injury cases, including 418 fatalities, in 2024. Of the total, the construction sector recorded the highest number of deaths, with 101 fatalities, underscoring the need to further strengthen a preventive safety culture.
Hazlina stated that DOSH continues to promote its 'Prevention is Better than Prosecution' approach by prioritizing preventive measures, self-compliance, and systematic risk management. HSE and Wellness Week 2026 featured a range of activities, including safety training, knowledge-sharing sessions with DOSH, SWCorp Malaysia, and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), a bowling tournament, recycling programmes, a blood donation campaign, health screenings, and employee wellbeing activities. The programme aimed to strengthen awareness among YTL Construction employees of the importance of safety, health, and wellbeing as essential elements of the company's workplace culture.
