Kuala lumpur: UMNO needs to adapt a new strategy to face the increasingly dynamic political landscape ahead of the Melaka and Johor state elections and the 16th general election (GE16), said UMNO deputy president Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He highlighted that changes in voter behaviour, current issues, and the political environment demand a more flexible approach based on current reality.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamad emphasized that the general elections are no longer static as the landscape, voters, and issues continue to evolve. This necessitates that UMNO's election strategy also evolves to match the present reality. He made these remarks during his opening speech at the UMNO 80th Anniversary Convention at Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre. Prominent figures such as UMNO president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and other senior party members were in attendance.
Mohamad discussed the importance of flexibility in modern politics, highlighting it as a crucial tool for restoring UMNO's dominance. This includes understanding public sentiment, evaluating the strength of opponents, and tailoring approaches accordingly. He emphasized that today's elections are driven by analysis and data, rather than just rhetoric and poster campaigns. Candidates must possess integrity, have the ability to win, and maintain a close connection with the public.
He also stated that UMNO must chart a new, more courageous direction focused on the future to ensure its survival in the challenging political landscape. Mohamad urged the party to stop relying on historical nostalgia and instead instill confidence through clear and relevant ideas for the future.
The deputy president pointed out that UMNO's current focus is on restoring, nurturing, and rebuilding its strength, leveraging its experience in crisis management and the loyalty of its members. He also stressed the importance of unity within the party, warning that division could weaken UMNO's political role and make it susceptible to manipulation by external interests.
Mohamad addressed the need for UMNO to tackle global and digital changes by fostering a professional generation and remaining relevant to the younger demographic. He also highlighted the importance of managing the reality of a diverse society, providing credible leadership, and addressing challenges strategically to prevent the party from being marginalized in the long term.
