Terengganu: Terengganu is considering the establishment of an elephant sanctuary as a solution to the ongoing issues with wild elephants. The suggestion comes in response to the increasing incidents of elephant attacks, attributed to the reduction of their natural habitats and the consequent impact on their food sources.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, three state representatives have proposed the creation of a sanctuary to provide a secure environment for captured elephants, ensuring they have sufficient food resources. This initiative aims to protect residents from elephant attacks, as existing preventive measures, such as electric fences, have not fully resolved the problem.

Currently, elephants that are captured and released back into their original habitats often return, posing a threat to local communities. Relocation costs for these elephants are significant, ranging between RM50,000 and RM70,000 per animal. In Terengganu, there are approximately 300 elephants remaining, and the proposed sanctuary
aims to preserve their population for the benefit of future generations.
