KUALA TERENGGANU: The prevalence of diabetes among elderly residents in Terengganu has reached a concerning level, with 24,000 individuals diagnosed with the condition. The data, drawn from the 2023 National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS), reveals that diabetes affects 16 percent of adults aged 18 and above in the state, surpassing the national rate of 15.6 percent.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Kasemani emphasized the importance of addressing non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, particularly among the elderly population. She made these remarks at the Senior Citizens and Diabetes Health Day celebration held at the Sungai Tarom District Council Hall. Dr. Kasemani outlined several initiatives by the Terengganu Health Department (JKNT) aimed at enhancing diabetes management.

The JKNT has initiated health screenings for senior citizens at 25 rural clinics and 55 health clinics throughout the state. Furthermore, senior citizen clubs have been established in every health clinic. These clubs, m
anaged by the members with assistance from clinic staff, focus on promoting health awareness and diabetes control.
