Tan Cheng Hoe Ready to Continue Leading Harimau Malaya After ASEAN Cup Success

Jakarta:Gelora Bung Karno Stadium: National team interim head coach Tan Cheng Hoe has expressed his willingness to continue his role with Harimau Malaya following their successful campaign at the FIFA 2026 ASEAN Cup, which concluded yesterday.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Cheng Hoe is dedicated to putting all his efforts into the national squad, provided he retains the trust of the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM). He stated that the decision regarding his position rests with FAM, emphasizing his commitment to the team as long as he is able.

Malaysia secured a 1-0 victory against Vietnam in the third-place play-off match, ending a 12-year winless streak against the team. Substitute striker Fergus Tierney scored the decisive goal in the 62nd minute at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium. Cheng Hoe's team concluded the tournament as the only unbeaten side, having conceded no goals throughout the event.

Cheng Hoe was appointed as interim head coach in June, replacing Peter Cklamovski. He previously managed the national team from December 2017 to December 2021 and was the assistant coach from 2009 to 2013. His achievements include winning the 2009 SEA Games gold medal and the 2010 AFF Suzuki Cup title as an assistant coach, and finishing as runner-up in the 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup as head coach.

On the domestic front, Cheng Hoe led Kedah to victory in the 2015 Premier League, the 2016 Malaysia Cup, and the 2017 Charity Shield. He also managed Selangor from 2022 to 2024 before moving to Thailand to coach Police Tero FC. In April 2025, he returned to the FAM as the national team's technical director.
