Indonesia Triumphs Over Thailand in Penalty Shootout to Win FIFA ASEAN Cup

Jakarta:Indonesia secured the inaugural FIFA ASEAN Cup 2026 title by defeating Thailand 4-2 on penalties, following a thrilling 2-2 draw in the final held at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the stadium was a sea of red as the Indonesian team, led by coach John Herdman, triumphed over Anthony Hudson's Thailand in a match attended by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

The first half concluded without goals despite both teams creating several scoring opportunities. Indonesia missed a key chance in the 69th minute when Mitchell Baker failed to convert from a promising position. Thailand's situation worsened in the 81st minute when Nicholas Mickelson received a second yellow card for fouling Ole Romeny.

Indonesia took advantage three minutes later with Dean James’ free-kick deflecting off Iklas Sanron into the net, leaving Thai goalkeeper Saranon Anuin helpless. Iklas Sanron redeemed himself in the 87th minute, scoring from a Seksan Ratree delivery to send the match into extra time.

Thailand seemed poised to win when Peeradol Chamrasamee scored in the 111th minute, but Elkan Baggott equalized for Indonesia four minutes from the end of extra time, setting the stage for a penalty shootout.

In the shootout, Sarach Yooyen hit the post with Thailand's third attempt, and Nattapong Sayriya's shot was saved by Indonesian goalkeeper Emil Audero. This allowed Indonesia to claim a 4-2 victory. Earlier in the day, Malaysia secured third place by defeating Vietnam 1-0.
