Kuala Terengganu:Prof Dr Suriyani Muhamad has been appointed as the new vice-chancellor of Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT), effective September 28.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the UMT Corporate Communications Office announced Suriyani's appointment citing her extensive experience in academia and management, along with her expertise in economics. She is expected to bring a comprehensive leadership perspective to enhance UMT's standing as a university specializing in marine and aquatic fields.

Suriyani previously held the position of dean at UMT's Faculty of Business, Economics and Social Development before her appointment as deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and International) in January 2025. During her tenure, she focused on strengthening the academic ecosystem by developing study programs aligned with industry needs and job market developments. She also prioritized internationalization by expanding mobility programs, offering UMT students opportunities for global academic experiences and cross-cultural exposure.

Additionally, Prof Dr Noor Maizura Mohamad Noor, the pro vice-chancellor (Industry, Community and Digital Networking) at UMT, has been appointed as the deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and International) effective the same date. Her experience in academic management, industry and community networking, and the university's digitalization agenda is expected to contribute to the continuity of academic management, particularly in crafting competitive academic programs.
