Street Dakwah Canopy Issue in Bukit Bintang: DBKL Action Stems from Public Complaint, Confirms Minister

Kuala lumpur: Enforcement action taken by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) against the stall for the Street Dakwah programme in Bukit Bintang was not linked to preaching activities, but was due to public complaints over the installation of a canopy. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Hannah Yeoh clarified this matter during her response in the Dewan Rakyat.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Yeoh stated that DBKL enforcement officers had visited the site to assess the situation, which included allegations of vandalism. The officers reportedly waited for about 30 minutes at the location after receiving the complaint, but no representative came forward, prompting further action.

The minister further explained that items such as folding chairs, tables, a canopy, and a trolley were seized but have since been reclaimed by Multiracial Reverted Muslims (MRM). Importantly, no religious materials were confiscated by DBKL during the process. This statement was made in response to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Dr Shahidan Kassim (PN-Arau) during the Minister's Question Time.

Hannah Yeoh also addressed the sentiments stirred by certain parties following the incident, which she said affected the DBKL officers on duty. She highlighted that one officer faced harassment on his Facebook account, leading him to deactivate it due to distress.

The minister expressed her disappointment over the perceptions being created and emphasized the importance of allowing enforcement officers to carry out their responsibilities without fear. She reminded that as civil servants, officers are fulfilling their duties honestly and responsibly.

In her concluding remarks, Hannah Yeoh advised all parties to refrain from making defamatory claims. She reiterated that while the Federal Territories Department supports dakwah efforts, these activities must adhere to regulations set by the authorities. On the topic of guidelines for dakwah activities, she mentioned that DBKL will collaborate with relevant agencies, particularly the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia and the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department.
