States Encouraged to Expand Friday Prayers Initiative at Shopping Malls

Permatang pauh: Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Dr. Zulkifli Hasan, has extended an invitation to states across the nation to hold Friday prayers at shopping malls, following the successful implementation of the initiative in the Federal Territories.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, this initiative, introduced in collaboration with the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (JAWI) and the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP), has already seen positive outcomes at locations such as IOI City Mall, Alamanda Shopping Centre, and Suria KLCC. Discussions are underway to expand the initiative to additional sites. Dr. Zulkifli expressed optimism about the initiative's potential to receive a favorable response from the states, encouraging them to participate.

Malaysia is home to more than 6,784 registered mosques, over 1,029 registered Friday surau, and more than 18,000 surau nationwide, supported by 11,000 imams who receive monthly allowances. Dr. Zulkifli noted interest from several shopping mall managements keen on establishing Friday surau, citing increased vibrancy and visitor numbers at malls that have already implemented the initiative.

Interest has also been shown by states with major urban centers, indicating potential expansion beyond shopping malls to other public locations like transportation terminals, airports, and highway rest areas. This expansion aims to facilitate easier access for Muslims wishing to perform Friday prayers.

Additionally, Dr. Zulkifli announced the nationwide expansion of the Rakan Muda Rakan Masjid programme, designed to boost youth participation in mosque activities through religious, community, and recreational events. Launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the program is being implemented in stages, including in Penang, to engage young people through activities that align with their interests, such as sports and social programs.

The Federal Territories have seen the formation of youth committees across over 75 mosques, actively organizing community programs. The government remains committed to strengthening the role of mosques nationwide as part of its broader efforts to enhance the administration of Islamic affairs.
