Cape town: The national hockey team staged a remarkable second-half comeback, overturning a 2-0 deficit to secure a 4-2 victory over the United States in the FIH Men's Nations Cup classification playoff in Cape Town, South Africa.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysia, known as the Speedy Tigers, advanced to the fifth-sixth playoff match scheduled for tomorrow. They will face either Ireland or Scotland at 8:30 pm Malaysian time.
The game began unfavorably for the Speedy Tigers, with the US taking an early lead through a penalty corner goal by Sekayi Charasika in the first minute. The situation worsened when Alberto Montilla extended the US lead with a field goal in the 17th minute.
However, a motivational half-time talk from the coaches seemed to invigorate the Malaysian team. They returned to the field with renewed vigor, scoring four consecutive goals to clinch the victory.
The comeback was initiated by Mohamad Akhimullah Anuar Esook's penalty corner goal in the 32nd minute. Muhammad Azrai Aizad Abu Kamal equalized with a field goal in the 39th minute, and veteran forward Faizal Shaari put Malaysia in the lead with a penalty corner goal in the 52nd minute. Muhamad Faris Harizan solidified the win with another penalty corner goal three minutes later.
