Kuala lumpur: Muhammad Azeem Mohd Fahmi and Nur Aishah Rofina Aling were crowned sprint king and sprint queen respectively after contrasting wins in the men's and women's 100-metre finals at the 2026 Malaysia Open Athletics Championships today. Perak's Muhammad Azeem clocked 10.21 seconds, securing his win over Johor's Muhammad Airiel Iskandar and Terengganu's Mohammad Armin Zahryl, who finished with times of 10.34 seconds and 10.44 seconds, respectively.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Muhammad Azeem shared that he did not have a specific target time in mind for the race due to fatigue. Having recently competed in the NCAA Championships in the United States, he only returned to Malaysia five days ago. Despite his physical state, he expressed gratitude for the opportunity to compete in front of a home audience.
While Muhammad Azeem secured his victory comfortably, Sabah's Nur Aishah Rofina faced a fierce competition. She narrowly claimed the women's 100m title with a time of 11.70 seconds, just 0.01 seconds ahead of Terengganu's Izzatul Musfirah Ahmad Kamal Azira. Team Malaysia University's Fatin Ilyana May Nayan finished third with a time of 12.03 seconds.
Nur Aishah Rofina celebrated her win and the achievement of a personal best, breaking her previous record of 11.76 seconds. She expressed her excitement and noted the difficulty of reaching such a milestone, which she had been aiming to break for five to six months.
Meanwhile, in the men's shot put event, Jonah Chang Anak Rigan met expectations with a winning throw of 18.30 meters. Selangor's Muhammad Ziyad Zolkefli and Johor's Fam Loong Deng took second and third place, with throws of 16.15 meters and 15.33 meters, respectively.
