South China Sea Code of Conduct and AI Restrictions to be Discussed in Dewan Rakyat

Kuala lumpur: Issues surrounding the South China Sea Code of Conduct (COC), temporary access restrictions to Grok artificial intelligence (AI), and early school admissions will be key topics in today's Dewan Rakyat discussions.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Order Paper on the official Parliament website indicates that Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin) will seek updates from the Minister of Foreign Affairs on the COC negotiation process in the South China Sea and Malaysia's involvement in finalizing the code. He will also address the security situation near Batu Puteh and ask about governmental measures for its resolution.

Datuk Mumtaz Md Nawi (PN-Tumpat) will question the Minister of Communications about the steps taken in response to the temporary restriction of Grok AI access in Malaysia, focusing on regulatory, enforcement, and monitoring measures to protect vulnerable groups.

Roslan Hashim (PN-Kulim Bandar Baharu) plans to inquire about the rationale behind allowing students to begin Year One at age six. He seeks clarification on whether empirical studies or impact assessments were conducted prior to the proposal's presentation to Parliament.

During the oral question-and-answer session, Jimmy Puah Wee Tse (PH-Tebrau) will ask the Minister of Youth and Sports about Malaysia's achievement of 200 medals at the 2025 SEA Games and future strategies to enhance performance in larger tournaments, particularly aiming for the country's first Olympic gold medal.

Rodziah Ismail (PH-Ampang) will request the Minister of Domestic Trade and Cost of Living to outline measures against the aggressive pricing strategies of foreign food and beverage brands and e-commerce platforms that threaten local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Following the Q and A session, the Dewan Rakyat will proceed with the debate on the Motion of Thanks for the Royal Address by members of Parliament. The Dewan Rakyat sitting is scheduled to last 20 days, concluding on March 3, while the Senate session will commence on February 23.
