Kuala lumpur: The Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS) has allocated RM4.1 million for weightlifting development this year and is open to considering the Malaysia Weightlifting Federation's (PABM) request for an additional RM1 million in annual funding. According to BERNAMA News Agency, the minister, Dr. Mohammed Taufiq Johari, stated that the 2026 allocation covers athlete and coaching development, as well as the Road to Gold (RTG), Podium, Pelapis, and grassroots talent development programmes. Discussions with PABM President Datuk Ayub Rahmat and several weightlifting associations are ongoing regarding the additional funding request, which is partly related to coaching costs and salaries. Dr. Taufiq emphasized the ministry's commitment to investing in sports with potential for Olympic success, expressing hope that weightlifting will continue to be prioritized for development. Detailed discussions will determine the specifics of the additional funding required. Speaking to reporters at Kuala Lumpur Internation al Airport (KLIA) after welcoming home Malaysia's Commonwealth Games contingent, the minister noted that two weightlifters are currently part of the RTG programme, with eight athletes under the Podium programme and another two in the Pelapis programme. Additionally, Dr. Taufiq pledged to address the welfare of state-level coaches under the National Sports Council (NSC) to ensure the sport's continued progress and performance. He highlighted the importance of supporting coaches' welfare to secure future victories for Malaysia. Weightlifting was Malaysia's standout sport at the Commonwealth Games, contributing five gold, one silver, and one bronze medal, helping the national team exceed its target with an overall haul of eight gold, three silver, and five bronze medals.
