Kuala Lumpur:A new national identity for Singapore's chip industry, SG Semiconductor, has been launched to bolster the country's role in the global semiconductor ecosystem.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the initiative was announced by Minister for Trade and Industry Dr. Tan See Leng, who stated that SG Semiconductor represents Singapore's strategic approach to collaborating with various industries and advancing its semiconductor sector. The sector is pivotal to Singapore's economy, contributing significantly to the global market with one in ten chips and one in five semiconductor equipment being produced in the republic.
Dr. Tan, speaking at the Innovate Together 2026 event, highlighted that Singapore has established a semiconductor hub through strategic partnerships, capabilities, and talent development. The next phase, he noted, will require an even stronger connection between industry expertise, scientific innovation, and government commitment.
SG Semiconductor, jointly developed by the Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) and the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), aims to enhance Singapore's visibility on the global stage by showcasing its strengths in research and development, advanced manufacturing, and industry partnerships. This initiative spans seven key technology areas, including advanced packaging, silicon photonics, and integrated circuit design.
Singapore is also focusing on developing capabilities in areas such as artificial intelligence (AI), advanced computing, and energy-efficient data communications. Dr. Tan emphasized that adopting AI strategically will be crucial for increasing productivity and accelerating innovation in Singapore's advanced manufacturing sector.
He further remarked that ongoing research and innovation by manufacturers are essential for keeping pace with rapid technological advancements. Success will hinge on the effective integration of sophisticated research, quality talent, and leading industry partners to maintain competitiveness in the semiconductor value chain.
