Felda bukit permai: The Communications Ministry, through the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), is intensifying its Safe Internet Campaign across all community levels following a significant rise in online scam cases, which resulted in losses amounting to RM2.77 billion last year, as stated by Deputy Minister Teo Nie Ching.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the reported figure indicates an alarming upward trend compared with RM1.28 billion in 2023 and RM1.57 billion in 2024, with investment scams comprising the majority of the losses. Teo elaborated that victims often see initial returns in their accounts, such as investing RM1,000 and watching it grow to RM3,000, which prompts further investment until they eventually lose all their savings.
During a community outreach programme with e-commerce platform Shopee in Felda Bukit Permai, Teo, who also serves as Kulai MP, explained that the ministry employs various strategies for different target groups to deliver digital awareness messages effectively, with a focus on cyberbullying at the primary school level.
At the community level, including Felda settlements, villages, and housing areas, the campaign emphasizes scam-related issues. Meanwhile, students in secondary schools and higher education institutions are educated on job scam risks and the dangers of mule accounts.
As of April 30, the campaign has been implemented in 10,134 schools, including national, vernacular, and secondary schools, as well as teacher training institutes and higher education institutions, reaching nearly 900,000 participants.
During the programme, 200 residents of Felda Bukit Permai received essential goods packs through a strategic collaboration with Shopee, along with health screening services and a Safe Internet Campaign briefing by staff from the National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI).
