Sarawak: Sarawak will establish a special committee tasked with formulating comprehensive and long-term planning and solutions to address flood problems in the state, including aspects of engineering, drainage systems, and river management. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg told this to reporters after visiting the Dewan Suarah Bintulu Temporary Evacuation Centre (PPS), which is housing flood victims from the Ulu Sebauh area.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Abang Johari emphasized the necessity of a state-level committee to plan and implement the best solutions to the flood problem. He noted that while there have been suggestions to dredge rivers as a preventive measure, he believes that sedimentation would continue to occur, requiring alternative approaches. The committee will discuss and examine all options to plan sustainable solutions without making hasty announcements.
The Premier highlighted that efforts to resolve flood issues would involve collaboration with developers. In addressing the infrastructure damage caused by the current floods, he mentioned that repair works on affected roads would be postponed until the monsoon season ends to avoid repeated repairs.
Abang Johari also commended the effectiveness of flood aid management in the Sebauh area, where the delivery of assistance to flood victims had been smooth and satisfactory. This included the provision of shelter, welfare, and health support for those affected by the floods.
