Kuala Lampur:Sarawak: Sarawak Governor Tun Dr. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar has urged historians and researchers to increase their efforts in collecting, digitizing, and publishing historical materials related to the state.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the governor emphasized that history should be grounded in facts and legal accuracy, rather than being influenced by populist politics or the instincts of political leaders. He described history as a process of critical thinking, evidence gathering, truth evaluation, and understanding humanity.
During a Statesman Lecture titled 'Rewriting Sarawak's History From the Perspective of Local Wisdom,' Wan Junaidi highlighted the importance of careful analysis and fairness in historical interpretation amidst a world filled with instant and often distorted information.
He called for collaboration among universities, museums, archives, libraries, schools, historical societies, cultural bodies, local communities, and families to preserve historical sources. The governor noted that old letters, photographs, stories, and manuscripts could contain vital insights into unwritten chapters of history.
Wan Junaidi stressed that the discipline of history must involve meticulous research, employing a range of sources, including local ones, before it is documented and published. He added that an honest historical account could aid society in recognizing that Sarawak was developed by people of diverse races, religions, languages, and regions.
