Doha:Sarawak Sarawak Energy has unveiled its first solar-integrated electric boat, Seri Batang Ai, marking a significant advancement in clean technology adoption. The vessel has been purpose-built to support operations at the Batang Ai Hydroelectric Plant (HEP).
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the naming ceremony was conducted by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at Pangkalan Sapi, coinciding with the Sarawak Regatta 2026. This event represents another progressive step in the state's sustainable energy efforts.
The 10-metre vessel, fabricated by Global Fibreglass Industries, features an electric propulsion system designed by Sarawak Energy's in-house research and development team. It is powered by twin 40 kilowatt electric outboard motors and a 92 kilowatt-hour battery energy storage system, supplemented by 3.6 kilowatt-peak rooftop solar panels and grid-charging capabilities. The boat can achieve a maximum speed of 25 km/h and has an operating range of 40 to 50 kilometers.
The vessel, capable of accommodating up to 12 passengers, is designed to support various operations at the Batang Ai HEP, including dam safety inspections, environmental monitoring, and personnel transportation. Sarawak Energy's group chief executive officer, Datuk Ruslan Abdul Ghani, highlighted that Seri Batang Ai builds on the organisation's earlier e-Penambang initiative and enhances local engineering capabilities.
The electric boat produces no direct exhaust emissions, minimizing noise and vibration compared to conventional fossil fuel-powered vessels. It was first showcased during the 40th anniversary celebration of the Batang Ai HEP in 2025 and received its Boat Licence and River Transport Permit on Oct 21, highlighting Sarawak Energy's commitment to environmentally responsible solutions.
