Man Vandalises ATMs and Injures Bystander in Sarikei Incident

Sarikei:A man vandalized five banking machines and injured a bystander after failing to withdraw cash from an ATM on Jalan Masjid Lama early this morning. The incident involved the suspect using a machete to damage two ATM machines, two cash deposit machines, and one cheque deposit machine.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the 38-year-old suspect acted out of dissatisfaction after being unable to withdraw money and admitted to being intoxicated. Following the vandalism, the suspect fled in a Toyota Hilux, driving against traffic and crashing into a road divider.

At a nearby location, a 21-year-old man attempted to stop the suspect and was severely injured in the left hand with a machete. The victim was transported to Sarikei Hospital for treatment.

The suspect later surrendered at the Sarikei police station, where authorities seized a Toyota Hilux and a machete. A urine test indicated the suspect was positive for ketamine and benzodiazepine, but he had no previous criminal record.

The case is under investigation for multiple offenses, including vandalism, causing grievous harm, traffic violations, and drug-related charges.
