Pangkor: The search and rescue (SAR) operation for victims of the capsizing incident involving Indonesian migrants in waters off Pulau Pangkor was officially concluded today, marking the end of a six-day effort.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Perak Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) announced that the operation ended at 7 pm, after no new findings were reported in the designated search area. The incident, which occurred on May 11, led to the discovery of 39 victims in total, including 23 survivors and 16 confirmed fatalities.
Initial reports from the first day of the operation suggested that there were 37 individuals involved, but this figure has since been deemed inaccurate. Among those who died were nine men and seven women. Their bodies have been transported to Taiping and Teluk Intan Hospitals for post-mortem procedures and identification.
The SAR operation was a collaborative effort involving multiple agencies, including the Royal Malaysian Navy, the Marine Police Force, and local fishing communities. The boat, believed to have been carrying Indonesian migrants, capsized approximately 8.2 nautical miles from Pulau Pangkor as it was traveling to various destinations in Malaysia.
