Sabah Ministry Plans Cold Mix Solution for Pothole Repairs

Kota kinabalu: Sabah's Ministry of Works and Utilities has announced plans to implement the use of cold mix materials for the repair and maintenance of major roads across the state, specifically targeting pothole issues. Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, who is also the head of the ministry, revealed that this proposal will soon be included in the review of concession agreements.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Sabah Public Works Department (PWD) has been experimenting with modern materials such as Fibre Mixed Asphalt to enhance road surface strength and durability, which is crucial given the increasing traffic loads. Dr Joachim shared that if these trials yield positive results, the new materials will be widely adopted for resurfacing and pothole repairs throughout Sabah.

Dr Joachim highlighted the drawbacks of the current hot mix repair method, which requires high temperatures and is therefore ineffective during rainy conditions. He emphasized that cold mix materials have proven effective during monsoon seasons, especially for roads categorized as level two (good) or level three (moderate) in terms of condition.

He also pointed out that while pothole repairs on more severely damaged roads, classified as levels four and five, are less durable due to extensive underlying damage, they remain necessary to prevent further road deterioration and minimize accident risks. The state government has allocated RM600.69 million to the PWD under the 2026 Budget to support road maintenance efforts, covering both paved roads managed by concession companies and gravel roads.

In addition to road maintenance efforts, the Sabah Water Department has been granted RM848 million for immediate and short-term projects aimed at improving the capacity and efficiency of the state's water supply system.
