Kuala lumpur: The National Registration Department (NRD) has confirmed that there is no change in policy regarding MyKad holders with dual citizenship who choose to surrender their Malaysian identity cards voluntarily. The department reassured the public that no automatic action will be taken against these individuals.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the statement came after Datuk Badrul Hisham Alias, the NRD's director-general, mentioned that the department is contemplating allowing dual citizenship holders to surrender their MyKad without facing legal consequences, apart from the obligatory forfeiture of one of their citizenships. His comments were in line with the existing measures outlined by the Federal Constitution to handle dual citizenship issues.
The NRD emphasized Malaysia's stance as a sovereign nation that does not recognize dual citizenship. The department pointed out that Malaysian citizens with foreign citizenships have the option to voluntarily renounce their Malaysian citizenship, rather than having it revoked under Articles 24, 25, or 26 of the Federal Constitution.
This clarification comes in response to a social media news clip that allegedly misinterpreted the director-general's statement. The NRD stressed that the phrase 'considering recommendations' should not be construed as a policy change or automatic action against dual citizenship holders. Instead, it refers to the possible options in citizenship revocation matters, ensuring they are handled judiciously and lawfully.
The NRD reiterated its commitment to fair and thorough evaluations of each case, based on the Federal Constitution's provisions and necessary approvals from relevant authorities, ensuring no arbitrary actions are taken.
