RTM Unveils Innovative Raya Musical Fashion Show to Challenge Traditional Festive TV Programming

Kuala Lumpur: Unlike the usual television programmes aired during Syawal, Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) is presenting a fashion showcase programme in the form of a musical this time. Broadcasting Department director-general, Datuk Suhaimi Sulaiman, said the programme ‘Citra Reka Busana’ will feature fashion designs inspired by Malaysia’s heritage and culture, alongside stories and history about fabrics, clothing designs, fabric patterns, and costumes.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Suhaimi, who is directly involved as the scriptwriter for the programme, explained that they aim to trace the evolution of fashion from the pre-independence era to the present day, highlighting works by local fashion designers. He emphasized that the fashion presentation is more than just a runway show, incorporating traditional Mak Yong performance elements, including performances by Pak Yong Rosnan, the Zapin Troupe, Inang Cina, Rebab music, and more.

The programme will also feature an added twist, as the hosts of ‘Citra Reka Busana’ entertain viewers with poetry and gurindam recitations in local dialects such as the East Coast and Northern dialects. The two-hour programme is scheduled to air at 9 pm on April 5 on TV2 and will also be available for viewing on RTMKlik.

When questioned about the timing of the programme during the festive season, Suhaimi stated that they wanted to break away from the stereotypical content aired during such periods. He expressed a desire to export unique content, drawing parallels to Korea’s success with their cultural exports. Suhaimi emphasized the importance of offering not just entertainment but also education, with unique cultural elements to set them apart.

Moreover, Suhaimi mentioned RTM’s efforts to produce multilingual content for international audiences through RTMKlik, which currently has viewers from Europe, South America, Africa, and Asia. He highlighted the goal of selling their content and ensuring international television stations broadcast it.

In addition to ‘Citra Reka Busana’, Suhaimi discussed the upcoming English-language cooking programme ‘Feast of Champion’, set to air on RTM Sports Channel during Ramadan. The show integrates culinary arts with nutritional science and will feature local athletes, including race car driver Keifli Othman and swimmer Steve Khiew, sharing tips on their healthy diets.
