Setia Alam: The recent shooting at a shopping mall in Setia Alam, Selangor, has underscored the urgent need to enhance the training modules for security guards, focusing on both theoretical knowledge and practical skills. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail emphasized these points during the Royal Address debate session for the Ministry of Home Affairs in the Dewan Rakyat.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Saifuddin proposed that the improvements should address key areas such as arrests and seizures, patrolling protocols, restricted-area security, and effective communication strategies. He highlighted that public safety is paramount, especially in situations like the recent incident, and discussed the significant role security guards play in handling such crises before police intervention.
The incident, which took place on February 8, saw a cleaning worker injured during a shooting at the shopping mall in Setia Alam. This event has brought to light the crucial nature of security guard responsibilities and the need for comprehensive training.
Saifuddin mentioned that the Ministry of Home Affairs is the regulatory authority responsible for issuing licenses to security companies, an industry that is valued between RM10 billion and RM12 billion annually. He noted that there are approximately 1,200 licensed security companies, and emphasized that before commencing operations, security guards must complete training modules provided by the police.
The recent shooting has introduced a new perspective on security considerations, particularly in public spaces like shopping malls. Despite the mall engaging a licensed security company, the incident highlighted potential gaps in current security practices and training.
Furthermore, Saifuddin pointed out that existing security guidelines for business premises are established under the Fire and Rescue Department, local authorities, and the Inspector-General of Police’s Standing Orders, suggesting that these guidelines may need to be revisited in light of recent events.
