Kota kinabalu: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced that the rapid growth in Sabah's development and tourism sectors has surpassed earlier projections, leading the federal government to expedite infrastructure upgrades, particularly at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA). He highlighted the significant increase in tourist arrivals as a primary driver for the urgent need to enhance and expand existing facilities.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized that under typical projections, such accelerated infrastructure expansion would not be necessary. However, Sabah's growth has exceeded expectations, marking commendable development. The announcement was made during the launch of the state-level Kaamatan Festival 2026 at Hongkod Koisaan, Kadazandusun Cultural Association (KDCA), attended by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, Deputy Chief Minister I Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalam, and KDCA president Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan.
In his address, Anwar praised Hajiji's leadership, noting that his administration's focus on development, stability, and well-being has contributed to one of the country's strongest tourism growth rates. To ensure equitable progress, Anwar mentioned nationwide poverty eradication programs and assistance initiatives like Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) and Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA).
Anwar also expressed pride in incorporating the Kaamatan Festival into his official calendar, signifying the MADANI Government's commitment to promoting racial, religious, and cultural diversity. He stressed that official events under his administration ensure the full inclusion of Sabah's cultural traditions and emphasized the importance of leaders embracing diversity to foster unity.
